Student Policy Analyst/Intern
Mackenzie River Basin Board, Canada Water Agency
Summer 2024 (12 Month Term)
"My Arts Work Experience work term has been a pivotal experience in my life. Working with MRBB has opened up doors to learning a plethora of transferable skills. I have learned a lot about environmental policy and the factors that contribute to environmental policies in Canada. I recently had the opportunity to go with my team to Yellowknife, North West Territories (NWT), for the NWT Water Stewardship Implementation Workshop. There I helped lead a wall tent session and discussion. Being able to visit Yellowknife and work actively within the Mackenzie River Basin was pivotal in developing my understanding of transboundary watersheds. Working closely with Indigenous communities and being introduced to Indigenous worldviews at Canada Water Agency has enriched my own worldviews and offered me insight into strengthening my allyship and understanding of intersectional environmentalism.
One of the most important things I have learned throughout my work experience is understanding the value of my contributions to the spaces I am in. It's a difficult transition for a lot of students to go from their academic sphere to a full-time job, but it's important to note that your work and contributions are valued. It's easy to get frustrated when you don't know everything. My advice to future AWE students is to be comfortable with feeling uncomfortable, ask lots of questions and know that you are where you are for a reason! "
