Education Department Intern
Indigenous Services Canada, GoC, Federal Student Work Experience Program
Winter 2024 (8 Month Term)
"My days consisted of going through past reports, organizing them in an Excel spreadsheet and presenting them on a PowerPoint in order to find answers to my supervisor’s questions about the current data stored at ISC. I think the most important thing I learned from this experience is that you have to find purpose in the work you do. Although the Excel spreadsheets got monotonous at times, the excitement behind what my work could lead to made me work even harder. I ensured I completed my tasks on time without rushing through them. I got to use a standing desk letting me work differently and live a healthier lifestyle. I was welcomed into an Indigenous community, where I was exposed to their art and culture. This was a very enriching and fantastic experience.
My advice to new AWE students would be to get enough sleep, especially if this is your first full-time job. If you end up staying up a little bit longer every night like I did, be prepared to spend half your paycheck on caffeine."
