Hello, My name is Gurleen Kaur (she/her) and I am a Career Peer Educator with the Career Centre. I have been in my position for three years and I always enjoy meeting new people to support them in their career journeys. Today I will discuss career wellness at the workplace!
Wellness at the workplace is important as it allows you to have a satisfying and meaningful career. Searching for jobs, updating resumes, preparing for job interviews and even starting a new job can be stressful, but these tips may help you through this challenging time:
Ask for help when needed
Everybody struggles at some point and it is okay to ask for help.
When you reach out for extra assistance if needed, you are demonstrating self-awareness and courage - it is not a weakness!
For example, you can reach out to the University of Alberta Career Centre to help you prepare for your next interview!
Set boundaries
As students, we always have so much on our plates, but it can be really beneficial to self reflect on our boundaries and limits.
Setting boundaries allows us to make space for things that matter to us, like friends, family and even ourselves.
For example, it is okay to ask your employer for accommodations if that will help you perform better when you are stressed.
Know your career values
Consider your preferences and motivators. Do you prefer to work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment? Do you enjoy working on a diverse team?
Think about your values because they guide your work and your relationship with your work.
For example, apply your preferences and motivators to your job search. If you like collaborating with others, look for positions within large teams. If you prefer independent project work, a freelance position might be of interest.
