Get career-ready this summer
Are you interested in securing a sweet Fall internship? Or maybe you joined AWE this year, but haven’t had the chance to explore our offerings yet. No matter where you are on your career journey, taking one or more of the following actions over the next 4 months will ensure that you stay career-focused!
Meet with your Work Experience Coordinator. Did you know that AWE staff are available throughout the Spring/Summer term? Both online and in-person appointments can be booked via WaitWell. Your Work Experience Coordinator can help you enhance your resume and/or cover letter, provide you with job search support and even help you prepare for an interview. Please provide as much information on the booking form as possible (including attachments, if applicable) so that we can prepare for a great discussion!
Create a master resume. A master resume contains all your work and volunteer experiences, transferable and technical skills, education and achievements, with multiple bullets under each section that tell your story in as many different ways as possible. It serves as a master file that you can continue adding to as you gain new skills and experiences. When you see a position you want to apply for, you can copy and edit your master resume to create a tailored version that aligns with the job posting. Although it takes a while to create, it will save you a lot of time going forward because you will only need to remove content that isn’t relevant.
Update your resume. If you are starting a new job this summer or returning to a previous job or you just haven’t looked at your resume for a while, the Spring/Summer period is a great time to revisit your work and make sure that all your information is current and accurate.
Volunteer. Edmonton is known as “Canada’s Festival City,” with more festivals than weeks in the year! Volunteering at a festival or community event is a fun way to meet new people, give back to the community, and gain valuable skills and experience for your resume plus, you might score some cool perks along the way. We will promote all kinds of volunteer opportunities in the AWE Weekly Updates newsletter throughout the next 4 months, so stay tuned for updates! Volunteer Connector is also a great place to search for opportunities across Edmonton.
We hope that these tips are helpful as you wrap up the Winter term and begin Spring/Summer studies, work and/or adventures! If you have any questions, please reach out to your Work Experience Coordinator.
