As the new year begins, it’s the perfect time to set goals that can give your job search and career development a head start so we’re bringing back some of last year’s top tips to get you job-ready. Although a new term often feels like a whirlwind of assignments, exams, and commitments, incorporating a few intentional habits into your routine can pay off in the long run.
Meet with your instructors. All instructors have office hours, which are often underutilized by students. Instructors can support you through tough course material and help you with strategies to succeed academically -and it never hurts to have connections with a few instructors in case an employer requires an academic reference as part of a job application!
Set time aside to search for jobs. We often tell students that being in AWE is like taking on a whole other course, because the job search and ensuing application process is time consuming. By incorporating some time for AWE jobs into your weekly schedule, you will ensure that you don’t miss any great job postings!
Seek out resume and cover letter support early and often. Crafting your work search documents requires a keen attention to detail, but practice makes perfect! We strongly encourage you to book a resume and cover letter review with your Work Experience Coordinator or Career Centre staff as soon as possible, even if you don’t have a position in mind yet. Proactive planning will ensure that you are ready to craft strong, attention-grabbing documents, even with tight deadlines.
We hope that these tips help you start the New Year strongly, but please reach out to your Work Experience Coordinator if you have any questions!
