A brief overview 

Relational accountability is a concept rooted in Indigenous ways of knowing and being, emphasizing responsibility within relationships. It recognizes that knowledge, research, and actions are interconnected with people, communities, land, and the natural world.

In research, relational accountability means being answerable to the relationships that sustain the work, including Indigenous communities, ancestors, and future generations. It requires researchers to act with respect, reciprocity, and responsibility—ensuring that the knowledge shared and generated benefits the people involved and aligns with community values and priorities.

This framework contrasts with Western notions of accountability, which often focus on individual responsibility and measurable outcomes. Instead, relational accountability prioritizes the integrity of relationships and the ongoing responsibilities that come with them.
