Finances

When planning for the years your student will spend at UAH, understanding the financial piece is of the puzzle is key. Student finances are handled by both the Bursar's Office and Financial Aid. It is important to note that these are two separate offices that oversee different aspects of student finances. UAH understands higher education involves a major financial commitment and this section is designed to serve as a helpful guide to understanding what each of the two areas oversee and how they can best assist your student.

The Bursar's Office manages student accounts, including the billing and collection of fees, and student refunds.

All charges are due on the first official day of each semester. Please note, tuition bills are not mailed to students. Students should check their account balances frequently. To check their account balance, students should log in to MyUAH.

All billing statements will be made available online through myUAH. The university does not send billing statements through postal mail service.

Students have the option of granting parents access to billing information through the bill payment area of myUAH. This allows access to upcoming due dates, payment and account activity, and the ability to make payments on behalf of the student. This access also allows access to communications associated with the account including payment reminders, rebalancing notifications, and other important announcement.

DELINQUENT ACCOUNTS

Once an account becomes past due, students are contacted via email, letter, and/or phone requesting they contact the Bursar's Office to arrange payment for their accounts. It is a student's responsibility to provide the University with a correct address, email, and phone number, thus claims of not receiving notification are invalid excuses for an unpaid account balance, including collection costs, especially if a payment contract is involved.

If a student is unresponsive to efforts made by the Bursar's Office to bring the account current, the outstanding balance is referred to a collection agency.

If a student has signed a contract or promissory note (i.e., housing lease, deferred payment agreement, or miscellaneous loan) any and all costs incurred in collecting, or attempting to collect the debt will be charged to the student and the student will be responsible for reimbursing the University as agreed.

Once an account has been transferred to a collection agency, students should contact the collection agency directly to arrange payment.

REFUNDS

Student refunds are processed approximately once every week throughout the academic year. Students are notified via their UAH email account when a refund has been processed and given instructions as to how they will receive the funds. If payment was made by personal check, a refund will be issued after the check clears the bank. Students suspended for disciplinary reasons are not eligible for a refund.

The U.S. Department of Education requires the University to refund to the borrower any overpayment of fees paid by Federal Student Aid funds. If desired, students may return the refund check to the University to pay future fees. Students wishing to return refunds to pay back federal loans should contact the Office of Financial Aid (finaid@uah.edu) for guidelines.

Refunds are issued in three ways:

    • Direct Deposit

        • Student must have a personal checking account in their name and submit the Direct Deposit Form.

    • Credit Card

        • The University must refund a credit card that has been used to pay a previous balance for up to the exact amount that was charged to that card.

    • Check

        • For students who do not have direct deposit or full credit card refunds, a check will be issued. Checks not picked up within 3 weeks are mailed to the address on file in Banner.

At UAH, we believe that a family's focus should be on their student's education, not how the student will pay for it. More than 2/3 of UAH students receive some form of financial assistance and that is why we are committed to exploring the variety of opportunities available to your student:

ELIGIBILITY

All students typically have eligibility for some form of financial aid whether it is grants, scholarships, or loans. All students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students can begin applying for financial aid through the FAFSA anytime after October 1, preceding the academic year the student plans to attend UAH. Students must be admitted to the university, however, before financial aid can be awarded.

CHECKING FINANCIAL AID STATUS

If your student filed their FAFSA more than four weeks ago and has not yet received their Student Aid Report (SAR), encourage your student to contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243.

If your student has received their copy of the SAR from the U.S. Department of Education, contact the the Office of Financial Aid to verify they have received a copy of your students SAR.

REAPPLYING FOR FINANCIAL AID

After completing the FAFSA for the first time, students will be required to complete a renenwal FAFSA annually prior to the fall semester.

Students who wish to apply for summer financial aid must notify the Financial Aid Office to have their eligibility evaluated. Additional information about summer aid can be found here.

SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS

All students at UAH receiving federal aid must make satisfactory academic progress toward completion of their degree(s) within a reasonable length of time. UAH's standing committee on federal financial aid has approved the following standards defining Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), in accordance with regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Education.

An undergraduate student is considered to be making satisfactory progress when the following criteria is met:

      • Student is admitted and enrolled as a degree-seeking student

      • Student meets the required qualitative measure for federal financial aid recipients

      • Student maintains measurable progress toward the completion of the degree

      • Student completes degree requirements within a reasonable length of time

A student's SAP is evaluated at the end of every semester, including summer. The first violation will result in the student receiving a warning. The second violation will result in loss of financial aid eligibility. All notifications will be sent to the student's official university email address.

APPEALING FINANCIAL AID SUSPENSION

If a student becomes ineligible for federal financial aid because they have not maintained satisfactory academic progress toward completion of their degree, the student may reapply for federal financial aid once their academic performance meets the required standards.

When mitigating circumstances are involved, students may appeal the decision. Appeals should be submitted immediately.

When a student becomes ineligible for financial aid, they will receive a SAP notification email that will include information on how to submit a SAP appeal online. The following information is required for the appeal process:

      • Explanation of the reason(s) why satisfactory progress is not being met

      • Description of corrective action taken to resolve the situation

      • Documentation that supports the circumstances referenced in your appeal

The Financial Aid Appeals Committee will review the appeal submission and a decision will be made within two weeks of review. Appeals may be approved without provision, approved provisionally - entailing a probationary period in which the student must earn a given number of credit hours and/or specified GPA, or denied.

It is the student’s responsibility to initiate any appeal for federal financial aid eligibility. Appeals for academic reinstatement granted by the UAH Registrar or other departments do not constitute reinstatement of federal financial aid eligibility.

Decisions of the Appeal Committee are final.

ACADEMIC MERIT AWARDS

UAH's merit tuition scholarships recognize incoming first-time freshmen (including international students) who have demonstrated superior academic achievement in high school.

All merit tuition scholarships are four-year awards for fall and spring semesters, renewable each semester based on full-time student status and satisfactory academic progress.

No separate scholarship application is required. Students who submit an application for admission, official transcripts, and standardized test scores are automatically eligible for consideration.
