2024-2025 Class photostory
We enjoyed taking another look at maps and globes with the focus on Earth's different landforms and bodies of water. Over the course of the next couple of weeks, this work will transform into students making their own model including different landforms. We will flood these models so students can observe how landforms can change over time.
We had the opportunity to name a snow plow again this year. The newly named SS Snow Scout came to visit us this week. We were all very excited to see Scout join in the celebration as well! 🙂
Making estimates about and then counting the seeds in pumpkins was both a challenging and fun time. Of course we had to carve our pumpkins into golden homes as well. Have you read the book Mouskin's Golden Home?
Creating bear caves was a fun building activity and also had us thinking about animal adaptations (one of our science standards this year).
In our STEM challenge this week, students had to use popsicle sticks and clothes pins to create a bridge that could hold a book. Many bridges held more than one!
Engineering bridges and houses, oh my!
Friday Tea Parties are quickly becoming a new favorite tradition! We have been sampling herbal teas that were grown in our school gardens over the summer!
Here are some of the tiny perfect things we found in the forest at ECO. If you have not checked out the book Tiny Perfect Things by M. H. Clark, you are missing out. This sweet story teaches us to look closely for all the amazing things that surround us on our outdoor adventures.
Our all school hike was so much fun! I enjoyed the Mt. Mansfield touring center hike but also loved hearing about all the other fun adventures had by all. What an amazing opportunity to get outside and have some fun!!
To the right are some lovely engineering mentor text we have read to help us think more about what engineers do and how they solve problems.
Mrs. Aryln taught us a new protocol for answering comprehension questions about stories we read. We used this protocol with the story The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.
This week we started our first science unit which will focus on climate zones around our world. We looked at houses around the world and made predictions about which climate these houses might be in. We extended this work out to ECO by all making a home in our very own temperate climate zone for a mouse to move into for winter.
This week we had our first ECO with Mrs. Drown's class. We had a blast! We are very excited to be doing this learning together this year. We used our time this week to start defining areas of our "classroom" and teaching Mrs. Drown's class about our three cares. Ask your child what the ECO cares are and how we show them while out at ECO.
This week in Tech we had our first day of keyboarding. Keyboarding will be a regular part of our schedule every other Wednesday. This practice will help make us more proficient typers and computer users. We use a program called Keyboarding Without Tears.
Our first ECO happened Wednesday! We joined Mrs. G in the garden to harvest herbs that we will dry into tea. We then found a spot in the woods that we want to turn into our own outdoor classroom. We read the book "Not a Stick" and made not a sticks of our own (maybe you saw one in your child's backpack). This lesson helped us think about stick safety and how we can use our imagination while outside with limited resources.
On Tuesday nights be on the lookout for ECO tags on your child's backpack. This will be an indicator that we will be headed into the woods on Wednesday. Bug spray, good walking shoes and appropriate outdoor clothing are all things to think about packing for a fun and successful ECO experience for all.
This week a major focus has been growth mindset. We have used these mentor texts to help us think about things we can't do yet but want to be able to do. We created goals and even focused these goals into hopes and dreams for this school year. Be on the lookout for these hanging in our classroom at open house on October 2nd!
David Goes to School is a classic back to school text. After reading this story we thought about our school agreements. Safe, Responsible, Respectful. We thought about what each of these things means and all had the chance to share our amazing ideas during this "chalk talk". This activity was both fun, engaging and informative. After this activity we were able to make agreements for our classroom for this year.
