Student Rating: 3.33 out of 5
Description
As the only option for first year housing not located on Freshman Hill, the First-Year Quads are a specific grouping of buildings in the on-campus Residential Quads reserved for freshmen. There are four halls: Hoeing, Gilbert, Tiernan, and Lovejoy. Given the age of the buildings, there’s an aesthetic appeal to be had with these brick buildings embraced by ivy. However, as a result of said age, there is no air conditioning, no elevators, and no carpeting. Given the hilly landscape, there are several entrances to different various floors for convenience. The advantage of the quad is not only its location, but also the size of its rooms, which are generally larger than Sue B and Genesee. The options are the same as Genesee, where there are rooms for singles, doubles, and triples.
The cost to live in any of these halls from 2023-2024 is ~$11,332. Again, living in a triple will provide a discount.

Quotes
"Gilbert's chill. It's not great; we have the occasional cockroach or ant, but they mostly keep to themselves so they're not the worst neighbors. Replace the carpet and it'd probably look pretty decent. Also, the first few weeks were very sweaty without air conditioning, but it's okay because the temperature dropped to freezing immediately after. Overall, there are problems, but they don't bother me too much as long as I've got a place to sleep."
"The First-Year Quad is serviceable, but it pales in comparison to Genesee and Sue B. The quality of the First-Year Quad buildings really need to be improved so that they're on the same level as the First-Year Hill, such as air-conditioning and appearance of the dorm rooms."
"I enjoyed having a communal area and met lots of my friends through where I live. However, the air conditioning and general cleanliness was subpar, though that likely has to do with the people I live with. "
