St. Luke's FitOne is a fabulous annual event, promoting health and fitness, and benefits St. Luke's various programs for the community. The weekend kicks off with a 2-day expo, featuring vendors, activities, and information with all things health. FitOne also includes a competitive and fun 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon through Beautiful downtown Boise. This year, I had the opportunity to help design games to play with children at the Expo.
One of the games we created was a safety question-based giant Jenga game. My co-intern Madie and I researched and wrote 90 safety related questions we could ask children of different ages. Each giant Jenga block had a number which correlated to a question. The kids had so much fun pulling these giant cork blocks out and then being able to answer a question about bike helmets or water safety. This game was both entertaining and educational, for the kids and their parents alike.
Another game we created and presented at FitOne was a Safety Match game. A few of the other interns and I developed a list of common hazards and their safety counterparts and had them turned into pictures for kids to match up. For example, we had a picture of a boat, and the kids had to find the corresponding picture of a life jacket.
This picture shows the use of these safety cards at a similar event. As you can see, this boy has already matched a picture of a sun (hazard) with a picture of sunblock (safety item).
