Learn how to refine and enhance your Panopto recordings using the built-in editing tools and automatic captioning features.

Objectives:

• Navigate the Panopto timeline editor interface to successfully locate recordings, open the editing window, and apply final changes.

• Execute clean video edits using trimming tools to remove unwanted sections like setup time, pauses, or off-topic dialogue.

• Construct structured chapter markers and table of contents entries to improve student navigation and content organization.

• Modify system-generated automatic captions to correct spelling errors, technical terminology, and names for ADA-compliant accuracy.

Add and Edit a Panopto Recording Using the Video Editor

Edit your Panopto recording using this guide to open the browser-based editor, navigate the timeline dashboard, and apply final changes to your recording. Review Learn About the Video Editor

• Details - On this tab, you can edit the video’s title, description, add or remove tags, and see who created the video (if not yourself). Review How to Use Tags

• Cuts - If you add cuts to your Panopto video, they will appear here. Review How to Edit a Video

• Contents - On this tab, you can add or edit the Table of Contents for your video. A table of contents from a presentation may be automatically added. Review How to Add a Table of Contents

• Slides - If your video was filmed with a PowerPoint or Keynote presentation, the slide deck will appear here. You can edit these slides, and you can also upload slides in this area. Review How to Add and Edit Slides in the Editor

Add and Edit Auto Captions in a Panopto Recording

The Panopto editor can be used to import auto-captions of your Panopto recordings. While captions are a great way to make your video content accessible to students, auto-generated captions often contain errors. Learn how to add and edit auto-generated captions in Panopto recordings to ensure your Panopto recorded videos meet accessibility requirements for all learners.

• Learn how to use Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technology to generate machine captions from your spoken audio by importing the automated transcript block. It can take up to 2 hours after the Panopto recording has been processed for the Import Automatic Captions option to be available for selection. Review How to Import Automatic Captions

• Discover how to make manual text adjustments, rewrite specific lines, adjust timestamps down to the millisecond, or permanently delete unneeded caption blocks. Review How to Edit or Delete Captions

NOTE: The WCAG 2.1 Level AA standard, now embedded in the DOJ’s updated Title II rule, requires captions for all prerecorded synchronized media. Automatic captions must be reviewed and edited for accuracy.
