Canvas Course Management refers to the various tools, features, and processes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) that allow instructors, administrators, and sometimes students to manage and organize course content, activities, and participants. It is a key aspect of using Canvas effectively to deliver educational content, facilitate learning, and manage course-related tasks.
Experiment with Development Shells (Sandbox). Use a Canvas Development Shell (Sandbox) to test course designs, tools, and content before going live. Review How to Request a Canvas Sandbox to get started.
Types of Canvas Course Shells - In Canvas, several types of courses are designed to meet different educational and institutional needs.
Canvas Course Roles - Roles in Canvas are managed and updated through feeds provided by Colleague daily. The Teacher role is identified as the Instructor of Record for a course, while Students are enrolled in a course through the Registrar.
The Digital Learning Environment - TWU currently supports several digital technologies. The digital learning environment at TWU can be distinguished between the built-in features in Canvas and the External Tools or Cloud Services.
Canvas Archives - Canvas archives aim to systematically manage and preserve course materials within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) at Texas Woman’s University, ensuring efficient storage, compliance with institutional policies, and continued accessibility for instructors and students.
Preserving Course Content on the X:Drive - Instructors can preserve the gradebook, files, pages, quizzes, and other materials in native, interactive, and reusable formats (CSV, Word, Excel, PDF, HTML) and store them securely on the X:Drive for long-term editing, reuse, and compliance with TWU data retention policies.
Canvas Global Announcements and Calendar Events - Global announcements and calendar events are admin-only features (restricted to users with appropriate roles, such as Canvas Administrators or designated coordinators in Faculty Affairs). Regular instructors use course-level announcements and calendars instead.
