Every Tuesday, my co-teacher and I introduce a new English phrase during the morning assembly. This is to help improve the student's vocabulary and most importantly, their comprehension and usage of the phrases in specific contexts.
Aside from the weekly introduction of new phrases on Tuesdays, we have taken a step to help our students use the English by having the leaders from Grade 6 and Grade 5 to instruct the morning assembly announcements in English.
Every month, we have an educational week dedicated to exploring a variety of key holidays and topics. Some of the things we have introduced include cultural celebrations like Diwali, Mid Autumn Festival, Easter, and Christmas, followed by facinating regions such as Nagaland in India, and even a little bit of science, where we talk about plants and its parts.
While these activites do help introduce new vocabulary to the students, engaging in these new topics allow students to foster a broader worldview and also develop their critical thinking skills while preparing them to be informed and empathetic.
Last month (May 2026), we held our annual Spelling Bee competition for all grades. Before the event, we provided our students with a list of words to prepare themselves for the competition.
At Yongfeng, we also hold English activities for various events and holiday-related themes. From Children's day, Halloween, Christmas, Easter to Mother's Day and so on, we try to create more opportunities for our students to not only learn the language but to boost their comprehension. These activities usually take place outside of their regular classrooms, making it more fun and enjoyable for the students.
