Ms. Kathy, a nurse from Michigan, USA, graciously visited our school. It was a great honor and privilege to welcome her, as it was the first time our school was visited by someone from a Western country for a cultural exchange. The students expressed genuine excitement and joy. In preparation for this meaningful event, Grade 5 and Grade 6 students actively participated, alongside the school’s Foreign English teacher and Local English teacher.
For the first session, the Grade 5 students engaged in a Question-and-Answer activity. They had prepared numerous questions in advance and took this opportunity to practice their English conversation skills. Following this, a video presentation was shown, featuring the Grade 5 students talking about their favorite subjects and showcasing the school’s facilities. Afterwards, the school’s foreign English teacher, together with the local English teacher, delivered a presentation on Taiwan’s bubble tea, its history, the different well-known bubble tea shops, and the ingredients commonly found in bubble tea.
At the end of the event, the school director and principal distributed bubble tea and sweet rice dumplings to everyone, which were greatly enjoyed by the students and Ms. Kathy.
For the next session, the Grade 6 students focused on the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival. They presented a role play depicting the story behind the festival and the origin of sticky rice dumplings. In addition, the students participated in a Question-and-Answer activity related to the topic, allowing them to practice their English communication skills while deepening their understanding of the cultural tradition.
The students also discussed and demonstrated how to make sticky rice dumplings. Our local English teacher guided Ms. Kathy through the process so she could experience making one herself, while the other students made their own dumplings. To end the session and celebrate the success of the event, the students were served oolong tea along with the sticky rice dumplings they had prepared.
My local English teacher and I toured Ms. Kathy around Lukang, Changhua. We visited Lukang Longshan Temple, one of the oldest temples in Changhua, and explored Lukang Old Street, where we purchased some famous local delicacies. We also introduced her to Taiwanese hotpot. We spent nearly two days with Ms. Kathy, and sharing this experience was a valuable opportunity for both my local teacher and me, as it allowed us to deepen our cultural understanding and strengthen our collaboration in providing meaningful learning experiences for our students.
