The Abenaki tribe is native to the New England region of the United States, they have been around the area for approximately 20,000 years. Their language is endangered because the kids aren't learning it. There are also only a little over 2,000 native Abenaki people left.
The Abenaki hunted for food by taking two rocks then hitting them off of each other until they were sharp and pointed. this method is called "flint knapping" The Abenaki mainly hunted for their food in tall grass, forests, and by the water side. The Abenaki made pottery, they made it by using wet mud from the water side and molded it into bowls cups and other things they may have used.
The Abenaki men were warriors and fought in wars, while the women were farmers and cooked and also took care of childcare., the woman would work long days in the fields picking food for their community and they would plant all the food. The Abenaki men also hunted for game to eat, the women help cut it up and they cooked it. They cook for everyone in their tribe not just a couple of people.
The Abenaki people lived in house type structures called wigwams. " A wigwam was a type of house used mainly by Algonquian peoples but also other Indigenous peoples in the eastern half of North America in precolonial days. Wigwams had a cone shape and were typically made out of wood. Sometimes, animal hides would cover the outer walls of the structure. Wigwams were built for easy disassembling and reassembling so that hunting parties and travelling families could have shelter in their new location."
The Abenaki got along with most of the other tribes except their enemies The Iroquois, the Abnaki called the Iroquois “man-eaters,” since they participated in cannibalism on their enemies, the Iroquois also raided the Abnaki across what's now Lake Champlain.
The Europeans found the Abenaki people in North America and traded with them and taught them Christianity the Abenaki were nice to the Europeans, the Europeans and the Abenaki were able to get along great because of the influence the French missionaries had on them.
