The Aleut tribe lived in Southwestern Alaska and the Aleutian islands.
The Aleut people had their own language no other tribes spoke it but them and the language is still alive but close to being gone.
They were in family units sort of like how people live now. Aleut society was ranked, with hereditary classes of high nobles, commoners, and slaves. The leaders were recruited from the high nobles or the chiefly elite.
Interaction with Europeans
The first ever encounter that the Aleut Unangan people had with the Russian people colonizers was in 1741
Aleut villagers were detained by enemy forces and sent to Japan for the duration of the war. After war's end, they were shipped roundabout to Alaska and were not allowed to return to their village.
One Aleut leader recognized by the State of Alaska for her work in teaching and reviving Aleut basketry was Anfesia Shapsnikoff.
