Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment

Action Item:

By 2023, the Lakewood School Library Team will develop a Scope and Sequence for library instruction that is aligned with the standards outlined below.

Summary: Library Learning Standards

The role of a librarian includes the teaching of information literacy skills as well as technology skills. The personnel of the Lakewood School Library refer to the following two professional organizations' standards when developing instructional programming. Instructional programming includes curriculum for library specials classes as well as curricular collaborations with teachers.

AASL Standards Framework for Learners - The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has created a framework for students to Think, Create, Share, and Grow in the school library as they learn to harness curiosity, model responsibility, inspire exploration, promote creativity, and deepen understanding.

ISTE Standards for Students - The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) is the foremost organization in teaching technology in the classroom and has come up with 7 key standards to empower students to become future ready, lifelong learners.

Standards Crosswalk - AASL and ISTE

See the Standards Crosswalk link to see how the standards put forth by AASL and ISTE overlap.

Results:

During this strategic planning cycle, the library team created a map of our existing programs and services.  We mapped these programs and services onto the standards from the AASL/ISTE Standards Crosswalk and developed learning targets for students. This was done as a starting-point for assessing our current program, and to provide  clarity to the students and school community about what learning goals students are meeting.

In the next strategic plan cycle, we will identify gaps in our programming, and develop new lessons and/or collaborations to address these gaps to ensure, at the very least, that each category of standards is being addressed by our work. Gaps and ongoing adjustments are to be expected due to the adaptive and quickly-changing nature of the information field.
