Math 8

Course Overview

Eighth grade mathematics includes Algebra and Geometry. In Algebra, we will work with expressions and solve linear equations and systems of linear equations. We will learn about functions and use functions to describe quantitative relationships. In Geometry, we will analyze two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence. We will learn about and use the Pythagorean Theorem, one of the most important theorems in mathematics.

The state test for 8^th Grade Mathematics will take place in early May. The curriculum map for this course can be found on my website.

Our Practice

Practice is critical to success in mathematics. Being good at math is like being good at a sport or speaking a foreign language: It comes easier to some than to others, but no one gets good at it without practice. Everyone can succeed with practice!

Homework will consist primarily of problem sets and interactive lessons to be completed on your Chromebook, home computer or mobile phone at home or during free time at school. These lessons will be submitted and monitored electronically. Additional written homework may be assigned. Daily homework will be graded on a pass/fail basis. No late homework will be accepted.

Test and quizzes will be given regularly. There will be no “pop” quizzes, students will always be made aware of an upcoming assessment no less than 24 hours in advance.

Grades

Grades will points-based but will be roughly weighted as follows:

Tests/Quizzes 75%

Homework 15%

Class Participation 10%

Absences/Late work

It is your responsibility to keep up with the material being taught in class when it is being taught. If you are able to use your smart phone, you are able to complete the homework on time, regardless of your attendance. If you are absent from class, the classwork for the day will be on google classroom and you are required to do the classwork at home and submit it upon your return. Tests will be made up on your lunch period or study hall period, if applicable.
