Second Grade

Art Show

Second Grade artists have had a great deal of fun this year exploring different art mediums as well as artists and their styles! Here is a brief description of the projects completed this year.

Line Sculpture- Students created their own paper sculptures inspired by the glass work of Dale Chihuly.
Miro Characters- Students painted pictures of two characters inspired by the artist Joan Miro. They had fun using roll and draw sheets to make one figure out of geometric shapes and the other out of organic shapes!
Suns- Students explored warm and cool colors in this Don Drumm inspired oil pastel project.
Spiders- Students learned about found object art and the parts of a spider, creating their own creative found object art spiders.
Van Gogh- Students learned about the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh and created their own painting in his style (brush strokes and painting his emotions) using texture and painting something that makes them feel happy.
Snowmen- Continuing with the artist Van Gogh, we looked at how the brush strokes create the illusion of movement in his work. Students drew and painted a snowman standing in the wind!
Perspective- Students reviewed warm and cool colors in this project. They also learned 3 tricks artists can use to create the illusion of depth in their art. Next they created beautiful landscapes that show depth.
Self Portraits- This is the project we were working on when remote learning began, not all of these were complete. Students used mirrors to draw a self portrait. This drawing was then copied and students colored them so one looked realistic and one abstract.
Name Designs- This project was an abstract self portrait where students decorated their name in block letters and then surrounded it with symbols that represented them.
Concepts and artists learned about during remote learning include: symmetry, James Rizzi, Charley Harper, Mary Blair, Jim Henson and Printmaking. Check out our remote learning showcase here.
