Reading includes five main components to become and continue to be an excellent reader. These pieces include phonemic awareness (knowing and manipulating sounds in spoken words), phonics (the relationship between written and spoken letters and sounds), reading fluency (accuracy, rate, expression and phasing), vocabulary (knowledge of words, definitions and context) and reading comprehension (understanding through various reading strategies).
Beginning this school year, grades K-5 will be starting a new ELA program called Fishtank. The students will be reviewing past skills and introduced to new skills throughout the school year.
Students will review and be introduced to various genres, different readings and reading strategies to strengthen their skills. Please encourage your third grader to read silently and orally at home several days a week. Reading to your student also supports their reading journey.
