At Roselawn High we have a very short 2 minute passing period. That means we have 2 minutes in between each 48 minute class to ourselves; only 2 minutes to ourselves after we just gave our teachers all our time, attention, and effort for 48 minutes.I don’t think it's fair to us students.
If teachers don't want us going to the bathroom during class and we can't go during passing period, when are we supposed to get water, go to the bathroom, and even socialize with other students? Longer passing periods would give students time to talk to a friend in the halls rather than in the classroom while trying to learn. I think I speak for most of Roselawn when I say we need longer than 2 minutes. Longer passing periods can even be beneficial for teachers because some teachers here teach multiple different subjects so therefore it would give them more time to prepare for the next class, rather than having the students wait for the teacher to prepare.
Going to the restroom is also a problem. Some teachers don’t allow students to go during class and tell them to go before or after class. However, bathrooms are often crowded and have no open stalls during the passing period.
When asked about where the extra time for longer passing periods would come from, the most popular answer was to just cut it out of lunch. “Lunch is basically just a big break, if we wanted to we could just chop up that break and place it into other spots,” said Carla Jackson.
Another problem with students being late is that some teachers are less sympathetic to the issue. Teachers on those ends need to be more sensitive to students being late. It’s unfair for a teacher to be punitive about students coming from the other side of campus being late.
Teachers, parents, and principals may disagree with changing the schedule because it could make the school day longer or could take away learning time in class. However, being on time to class is necessary and doing everything you have to do in 2 minutes is a struggle. As a result of not having enough time between classes, students are tardy. Tardies accumulate very fast within a week and can turn into detentions and eventually into days of ISS.
The most logical solution to this problem is to add more minutes during passing periods. This would give students more time to do what they have to do before and after class. Students should have more time during passing periods. It would help to make students not feel so rushed.
