I would like to be a labor and delivery nurse because I think it is a very cool and heartwarming job, but at the same time you also have to be very strong minded because being a nurse is definitely not for the weak. It can have very happy moments but also you deal with tragedies that you have to learn to cope with. It’s important to understand that it is normal for bad things to happen working in the nurse environment.
I feel like the nursing schedule of working is also another reason why I would love to be a nurse. Their schedule is very doable, you can work 3 times a week and then get a couple days off plus you get paid really well being a nurse. Delivery Nurses make $59.34 per hour and it takes about 2-4 years of schooling to be a labor and delivery nurse: “[t]o become a Labor and Delivery Nurse, you must have an Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor’s in Science of Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program” (Johnson and Johnson).
What made me interested in being a labor and delivery nurse was because I have gone through that experience of having a baby and I absolutely loved the experience even though it was a hard and painful situation. I would still go back and do it all over again because I love the feeling of giving birth and the whole hospital experience. Most of the nurses were very sweet and helpful. They made my experience very amazing and memorable in a good way. I wanna be that nurse for women so that they can have a good experience and enjoy their time in the hospital. “Labor and delivery nurses must have excellent communication, assessment, and teaching skills. They excel in providing supportive services to help new parents navigate the birthing process.” (Nurse Journal) I feel that I am a good communicator.
Back in the days they didn't have what's called an epidural but the first epidural use was in 1901 and as time went by the tech got more advanced and better so the epidural is definitely better now that it was back then with all of the technology in today's society. I don't necessarily wanna be the person to handle the birth of the baby, I would rather be the person who is on the side helping, because I feel like I would be too nervous to actually take out the baby. But then again, getting schooling for that may change my mind with practice and learning on how I would do that.
Also as a labor and delivery nurse you need to learn to work under pressure and be very quick with the stuff you are doing. When you really think about it, working under pressure is really hard but I feel like if you do the schooling and learn more about everything in school you should be okay because you will know what to do in bad situations and working with others. Another con with working as a nurse is that you have to be standing on your feet pretty much all day walking around and being up. I'm usually pretty good at standing on my feet. It's not a problem for me but that's just something that people might not like and would prefer to sit at a desk all day.
