June 10, 2025- Health Promotion Program at SMK Subang Utama
Today, I spent 5-6 hours volunteering at a health promotion event at a secondary school. For the beginning of the day, I sat in on lectures given to the high schoolers about topics such as mental health and digital addiction. Then, for the remainder of the day, students stopped by different stations to learn facts about smoking/vaping, nutrition, mental health, and diabetes. I helped at the mental health station, educating the high schoolers on mental health stigma and the importance of seeking help. Overall, I had a good time meeting the other volunteers and interacting with the high schoolers---they all seemed very enthusiastic to play the game and were especially happy to receive stress balls and pins at the end of it :)

June 12, 2025- Visiting the Malaysian Parkinson's Disease Association
I came back to the Parkinson's Disease Association today for my regular weekly visit, and as usual, we did some dancing. The elders are rehearsing for their annual dance show in August; I'm a bit sad I won't be able to see the results of all of their hard work, but I have been noticing improvement week by week! One of the dances they have to do is called "achy breaky heart," and I had the pleasure of being one of the instructor's partners/teaching the dance.
June 13, 2025- Shadowing in the Geriatric Clinic
Today, I shadowed Dr. Khairizan for 2 hours in the geriatric clinic, and I was able to meet 3 patients. Below are my observations:
two of the patients that came in asked about medication changes/expressed concern over medications for blood pressure or osteoporosis
one patient complained of pain in the breast area, and Dr. K discovered a lump during the physical exam; she ultimately decided to proceed with painkillers but no further procedures given his old age. This conversation with the patient made me realize how many factors a doctor must consider when offering a treatment plan for the patient; a majority of patients with breast cancer must proceed with follow-up examinations and surgery to improve their QOL, but given this patient's age and vulnerable status, it was better to temporarily relieve the pain rather than get rid of it altogether

June 15, 2025- CLAP Charity Run Health Screening
Today, I attended the CLAP Charity Run at UM and volunteered at a health screening station. All the runners stopped by our room after their run for a quick health check-up. We had five different stations: registration, anthropometry, blood pressure, glucose/cholesterol/hemoglobin levels, and consultation.
I was tasked with measuring height, weight, and calculating BMI for the runners. Then, the dieticians at our station indicated on each runner's slip whether they were underweight ("kurang berat badan"), normal, overweight ("lebih berat badan"), or obese.
