One of the main questions coming from programs waiting to begin the transition to PBE is, "What can we do to prepare for PBE?" This is an excellent question and the perfect one to be asking.
There are a few action items you can focus on until your program is assigned to a tier:
Make sure your program has unified content and ideally unified equipment. Often equipment purchases take a significant amount of time, so begin preparing budgets, applying for grants, etc. well before a potential PBE launch.
Learn all you can about Performance-Based Education.
Review all the resources and videos on this site.
Talk to CMEs from programs that are either live in PBE or are currently working through transition with the IDS Team.
Observe how courses are taught in the PBE format.
Ask questions of designers on the IDS Team and reach out to your program leadership.
Discuss any independent/outside accreditation requirements your program is held to. Talk to Katie Deering, your Dean and your Provosts about connecting with to start planning ahead for any extended curriculum approval timelines.
Continue to work closely with your program's industry partners to keep a close eye on the critical skills for the jobs and industry your students are headed into. The closer your courses are aligned with critical skills in industry, the more content will already be aligned before your program begins working on the transition to PBE.
Once a tier is finalized, the announcement will be sent to those programs. Tiers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 can be found on the PBE Living Playbook website under PBE Tier Rollout.
Before your program moves into the PBE model is a good time to think about which pieces working in your program right now and which pieces have some room for growth - especially through the lens of Industry (or your external credentialing organization when appropriate). Become more familiar with PBE, and start considering what your classes could look like in this model.
