The PBE Vision
"TSTC will fulfill our founding legislative purpose by targeting the highest yielding, most valuable, high-demand & high-tech industry jobs in Texas."
"All our programs should be among the best-in-class. So, a smaller number of highly effective programs is preferable over a larger number of average programs. We will become a predominately CBE college. "
"We will move away from a passive-learning model toward an active-learning model. Content conveyance should depend less on lecture-style methods and evolve toward alternative presentations such as video, web-delivery, self-guided research, and other resources. A “flipped” structure will be the ideal. Accordingly, faculty will eventually spend far more time on coaching, assessment, and validation while spending much less time lecturing."
Traditional vs. PBE
Comparison Details
Mastery Based
Students receive necessary instructional support throughout the learning process to fully learn and demonstrate mastery of the skills and concepts, at which point they are able to progress to the next competency.
Flexible Scheduling (where available)
Students are able to progress through the courses at a self-guided pace within the semester. Access to more online content allows for anytime, anywhere access to course materials, which supplements the ability for a student to spend their time in the areas of instruction where they need it most.
Student Centered
Flexible learning environments are offered with a focus on the student’s personal learning pathway. Students are provided with unique learning opportunities that lend to their preferred learning styles.
Competency-Centered Curriculum
Curriculum content delivery varies and includes a variety of assignments. It is often offered online or as a hybrid of online and face-to-face instruction with a focus on mastery of all competencies rather than an average of all assignments prior to advancing to the next competency.
Time Based
Students advance at the end of fixed time period, regardless of whether or not they learned the necessary concepts or skills.
Set Schedules
Students are limited to content based on scheduled face-to-face lectures and set class times. Schedules are determined by the institution and lectures are often not available outside of that live presentation.
Instructor Centered
Traditional classrooms tend to have a single instructor that delivers course content with little differentiation available for students. Much attention is placed on keeping everyone together on the pathway through a set time period.
Course-Centered Curriculum
Curriculum is course-based, primarily offered via lecture, discussion and lab, and is available either online or face-to-face with a focus on an average passing rate to move on to the next course.
