Homework Timelines & Expectations

(**Note: All homework will come home in the “Return to School” side of the red folder.)

Spelling

MondayThursday - The students should practice their words on a nightly basis at home.

Friday – The students take the word test.

Phonics

Mintonye has adopted the Phonics program, Fundations. Homework will be working on the sound skill/s for the week and will be tied to our Reading Homework schedule.

Reading

• The students will concentrate on one story each week. Because we do not always have full weeks, occasionally a note will be sent home explaining changes for a particular story.

• At the beginning of each new story, the students will be given a “Reading Assignment Sheet” listing the vocabulary words and nightly homework. The Reading Assignment Sheet is returned to school at the end of each story.

• Students should check (√) the line after completing their daily assignments. This gives them a sense of ownership in getting a job done.

• The Reading Assignment Sheets are to be kept in the red folders (“return to school” pocket) and brought back and forth to school every day. We will use them to review the words and go over the nightly assignments.

Math

The students will have math homework on an “as needed” basis, especially for the concepts they are having difficulty with. We will begin with "Numbers to 1,000" and continue through addition and subtraction with regrouping this first semester. Problem solving is a very important skill that must be learned well in order to do math activities throughout the year. The time spent on each chapter will depend on how quickly class achievement is attained. I have found that often “time & money” and “addition & subtraction with regrouping” can be problem areas for second graders. The students need lots of practice and help from both their teacher and parents to master these difficult concepts before advancing to third grade.
