Reading

For reading this year, we will be doing a variety of activities and lessons.

Students will start out the reading block with small group reading. During this time, students will complete a reader's response using the acronym RACE, silent read, and meet with me for a small group lesson. The students will have about thirty minutes of silent reading time each day, so it is very important that they have a silent reading book for each day. The classroom does have a library, and students are encouraged to check-out books from it. During the silent reading time, I will meet with small groups of students based upon skills. I will also meet with students to see how they are progressing with their books. I strongly recommend that students read for at least 20 minutes EACH night. One of the best ways to become a better read is to read more! So we are going to be reading each and every day in class. After the small group time, students will engage in a whole group reading lesson over a particular reading skill.

** In order for students to check-out books from the classroom library, they must have a classroom library contract filled out.
