When a student is absent, I will have a "Ketchup Folder" made for them with any work they need to complete. They will have the number of days they missed+1 to complete it without penalty (absent for 2 days, they will have 3 days after returning to complete it). After the given time, students will be expected to complete any missing work at recess.
If a student misses a test, I expect them to take it the following day. There are a few exceptions to this rule. If you know your child will be missing school, it is very beneficial for students to take tests early instead of taking it after a break. The other exception is if the student has been gone for long enough that they have not learned the content to take the test. In this case, the student will spend time with me learning the missed work before they take the test.
Each day, I will check homework, and if a student is missing it, they will miss recess to complete it. There will be no penalty on the grade because I believe grades should reflect a child's knowledge, not how quickly they work. The only time turning in work will affect a grade is if it never gets turned in. Any assignments that never gets turned in will be a zero.
Throughout each quarter every 1-2 weeks, I will give students a report on missing work. They will show what assignments I am missing from them. Any time I send a missing assignments report out, I expect students to stay in from recess to find and complete any previous missing assignments.
If an assignment is turned in without a name on it, then the student is responsible for finding and identifying his/her paper hanging up on the no name board. This will be treated as late word, and the student will be penalized 10%. 4th grade is an important year to really start being responsible, and turning in work with a name on it is vital.
