The spelling lists usually have a theme associated with them. This theme is listed at the top of each sectiony, as they are phonics-based in nature. You will see the title of the story that we are reading in the class that week. Each story has a specific reading strategy associated with it, for example, finding the main idea, text structure (compare/contrast. problem/solution, chronological order, cause/effect, description), or using context clues. These skills are included in each test that is taken over the stories.

A pretest is taken on Mondays, and the final test is taken on Fridays. If we have a short week of only 4 days, I still try to keep to this schedule. If we have a short week of only 3 days, I do not have a test on Friday. We continue with the same words the following week and have a test on the Friday of the following week.

Vocabulary: At the bottom of each spreadsheet, you will see a tab that says "Vocabulary." Click on this tab to see that week's vocabulary words. Please note that the students should not only study the definition of each word, but they should also study the part of speech for each vocabulary word. They need to be able to tell me if the word is an adjective, noun, adverb, or a verb, as it is used in the sentence that I provide.
