Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader (AR) is part of our reading program. AR is a goal-oriented independent reading program designed to improve your child’s independent reading level through the further development of reading comprehension. Students will have 15-20 minutes of reading time in the classroom every day. Your student’s daily homework includes reading 20 minutes four out of the five nights.

To assess individual reading levels, students are tested with a STAR reading test (on the computer). Then, based on the results, each student is assigned his or her independent reading level. Your child’s STAR Reading level will be assessed at the end of each grading period.

Students will choose books at their level, read for comprehension, then answer 5-10 questions about the story on the computer. A percent grade is assessed along with a point value for the book. A quiz below 60% earns no point value. Our classroom goal is at least 80% accuracy on each quiz taken.

Your child will have an AR goal to meet each nine week period. It will be calculated in their final grades.
