English 9 Honors is distinguised from its ACP coutnerpart in a variety of ways including pace, material, level of academic expectations, and the requirement that students be highly self-motivated. The level of independence required in this course is great. Students are asked to perform responsibly and individually both inside and outside the classroom, forcing them to set higher standards for themselves and to foster an initiative that carries them beyond what is required. Students are expected to complete and comprehend substantial readig assignments outside of class without teacher guidance, and to consistently demonstrate higher level thinking in both their reading and writing. Since the students enrolled in English 9 Honors tend to be very strong in the organizational, grammatical, and mechanical aspects of their writing, instruction will focus on developing specific, orginal and insightful theses; developing and enhancing the discussion of ideas; and the fluid integration of proof into the paper, including direct quotes using correct MLA format. In addition, the learning that takes place in the honors classroom results in an application of knowledge; students will put their instruction into practice by participating in self-driected learning that includes designing questions, leading discussions, and analyzing passages independently. English 9 Honors is truly a self-driven course in that students utilize their teachers, peers, and texts as tools to enhance their own self-motivated learning.
