Each year, the IB junior cohort at LHS concludes the school year with a five-day immersive learning experience in Washington, D.C. This dynamic trip is designed to deepen students’ understanding of the world through the lens of the IB curriculum, with purposeful connections to History, Language and Literature, Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).
Students explore iconic sites such as the U.S. Capitol, The White House, and George Washington’s Mount Vernon, while touring Smithsonian institutions including the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Portrait Gallery, the Air and Space Museum, the Museum of Natural History, and the Museum of American History. Evening highlights have included a private Monuments by Moonlight tour and a night at Nationals Park to see the Braves play.
Throughout the trip, students maintain a reflection journal, using writing and dialogue to process each experience through a personal and academic lens. These reflections help students draw meaningful connections between what they see and what they study—whether it’s through the lens of historical context, artistic expression, ethical questions, or language and identity.
This experience fosters Approaches to Learning skills such as critical thinking, communication, and self-management, while nurturing IB Learner Profile traits like reflectiveness, open-mindedness, and global awareness. The Washington, D.C. trip serves as a powerful living classroom—where knowledge is experienced, perspectives are challenged, and learning becomes personal.
