Debseconeag Lakes Canoe Trip

Paddling, Ice Caves, and Beach Camping!

August 2024, we took on an epic adventure into the breathtaking Debsconeag Lakes Wilderness Area! Our journey began with a paddle down a section of the West Branch of the Penobscot River, leading us to our campsite on First Debsconeag Lake. The campsite was straight out of a dream – a sandy beach with amazing views of the sparkling water and surrounding forest.

Every day was packed with action and fun. We sharpened our paddling skills, mastered T-rescues, and practiced water safety. But it wasn’t all work! The shallow cove near camp was perfect for football, frisbee, and cooling off during those hot summer afternoons.

One highlight? Paddling across the entire lake to hike the portage trail and check out Second Debsconeag Lake.

And on Day 3, we upped the adventure by exploring the legendary Debsconeag Ice Caves! Even in August, the caves were icy cold, with actual ice inside – a chilling, unforgettable experience.

We capped off the trip with a thrilling paddle down a Class I rapid called Wheelbarrow Pitch. Scouts geared up for safety, with throw bags and rescue boats ready. Then, eight scouts and all the adults took on the rapid in an exciting, fast-moving ride that had everyone cheering by the end!

This trip had it all – incredible scenery, new skills, thrilling challenges, and nonstop fun. Where will the adventure take us next?

Goat Island Campout

Our Epic Weekend of Adventure, Service, and Ghost Stories!

In June 2024, Troop 310 and Crew 3333 embarked on an epic adventure when we joined Kennebunk Troop 304 on their annual trip to Goat Island! Just a short journey off our coast, this historic island and its lighthouse became the perfect setting for an unforgettable weekend.

We spent our days exploring every corner of the island, and camped overnight on the small but comfortable lawn. Our crew jumped into action, contributing over 200 hours of service to help the island recover from winter storm damage. We moved rocks, raked gravel, and even helped set up the docks – teamwork at its best!

The real magic happened when we explored an enormous tide pool. It was teeming with life, and we had a blast catching crabs and even a few small lobsters!

The weekend wrapped up with a campfire with the lighthouse glowing softly in the distance as the lighthouse keeper captivated us with true ghost stories about the island’s mysterious past. Goosebumps guaranteed!

This weekend was one for the books – adventure, service, and unforgettable memories all rolled into one!

Memorial Scout Camp & Acadia National Park Adventure

Exploring Downeast Maine

Our Summer 2023 Trip 310 was an unforgettable journey, filled with adventure, exploration, and plenty of fun! We kicked off the trek north from Saco, making a delicious pit stop at Dysart’s in Bangor for a hearty lunch before continuing our journey.

We arrived at Memorial Scout Camp, ready for a week of adventure. After settling in, we spent the afternoon exploring the camp and its beautiful waterfront. Scouts took charge of planning our Acadia National Park day and worked on First Class cooking requirements for Friday’s meals.

Thursday: We started early for Acadia National Park, greeted by a mysterious fog that cloaked the island. But as the day went on, the fog began to lift, revealing stunning views.

Our first stop: Flying Mountain! The hike was a highlight, offering breathtaking views of Somes Sound. As we hiked along the ridge, we stopped at several scenic viewpoints and explored the tidal zone at Valley Cove. After the hike, we enjoyed a foggy lunch at Sand Beach. A smaller group then ventured to Thunder Hole—a carved-out inlet along Mount Desert Island’s rocky coastline. The scouts were eager to see more, so we made our way up Cadillac Mountain, catching a spectacular view of the fog lifting over Bar Harbor. The day wouldn’t be complete without a sweet ice cream treat! Afterward, we stopped for dinner in Ellsworth before heading to Timber Tina’s Great Maine Lumberjack Show for an exciting evening.

Friday: The day was spent back at camp, filled with canoeing, swimming, fishing, and more fun activities. Scouts had the opportunity to explore the camp’s beautiful surroundings.

Overall, it was an amazing trip, filled with new experiences for many scouts as they explored a region of Maine that was new to them. We’ll be talking about this adventure for a long time!

Back to the Beach Camporee

100 years of Scouting in OOB

Over the weekend of May 17-19, 2019, Troops 310 and 308 were the hosts of the York District Spring Camporee in Old Orchard Beach.  The event was an anniversary celebration of the first Scout Encampment that took place in OOB in 1919. 350 Scouts and leaders from all over Maine and a few from NH and MA came and camped out ON THE BEACH!  The scouts participated in track and field and scout skills challenges.  There were exhibits from a chainsaw carver, Breaktrail Adventures, and Marine Mammals of Maine.  A scout parade was held followed by a memorial flag ceremony at Veteran's Memorial Park.  A campfire ceremony was held next to the pier as a closing ceremony.  OOB365 was a sponsor of the event.  We wish to thank OOB365, Sharri MacDonald,  the Old Orchard Public Works Department, the OOB Police Department, the OOB Fire Department, the Maine Marine Warden Service, Dennis Robillard,  and all of the adult volunteers that made this event a very memorable experience for the scouts.

White Water Rafting Summer 2019

The troop went White Water Rafting on the Kennebec River with Three Rivers Rafting!  We camped at the campground right on the river.  We cooked Chicken Pot Pie over the fire in Dutch Ovens! We got to swim in Moxie Falls and we went on a hike.  The most exciting part was going through the rapids of the Kennebec! We had a few scouts that fell out of the boat! But everyone had a great time!
