All student medications will be administered as directed. Students will be called to take morning, afternoon, and evening medications to ensure doses are not missed. In addition, staff will have basic first aid supplies and approved over-the-counter medications available as needed.
Notes about medications: Student will not be able to keep any medications on them (the only exception is an inhaler or epi-pen). Medications will be kept at the Camp Kern health center. Please DO NOT send medications in your child’s luggage or bag. They must be in the manufacturer’s container or prescription bottle and clearly marked with your child’s name and instructions. PLEASE BRING IN ANY MEDICATION BY MAY 4 SO WE HAVE TIME TO CHECK IT AND ORGANIZE IT
A school nurse will be in attendance during the day and will accompany the group on the long hike. At other times, she will be stationed in the camp’s nurse’s house and available as needed. Teachers are also prepared to assist with evening medications and minor medical needs.
Student safety is our top priority. Camp Kern has established emergency procedures in place, and staff are trained to respond quickly and appropriately to any situation. In the event of an emergency, parents/guardians will be contacted immediately using the phone numbers provided.
Feeling homesick is very common, especially for sixth graders, and we are well prepared to support students through it. Teachers and CK Staff will check in with students, offer reassurance, and help keep them engaged in activities. Most students begin to feel more comfortable once they are involved in the camp experience.
If we feel that a student would benefit from calling home and speaking with a parent or guardian, we will absolutely provide that opportunity. However, we have found that in many cases, staying engaged and allowing time to adjust helps homesickness pass more quickly. We will always use our best judgment and communicate with families as needed.
