The Transylvania University Research Training website is designed for faculty, staff, and students who plan to conduct research using human and/or animal subjects. Federal regulations require anyone conducting research to receive training/certification before starting their project. This website provides resources that will ensure research conducted at Transy is ethical and responsible.
This website was created in conjunction with Transy Institutional Review Board (IRB) committee, The Digital Liberal Arts Initiative (DLA), The Bingham Center for Teaching Excellence (BCTE), and researchers on campus. For more information about the Transy IRB committee, its purpose, and guidelines/procedures please refer to this resource (on-campus link, off-campus link).
Prior to applying for research approval at Transy, all investigators must receive training that certifies they are prepared to conduct research ethically and responsibly. In the past training for investigators was obtained through either the US Department of Health and Human Services Office for Human Research Protection or the CITI Program. While the CITI program is the most comprehensive certification, it is a paid resource. The US Department of Health and Human Services is free, but its training is not as comprehensive. Neither of these trainings met the needs of Transy researchers, especially student researchers.
This project stemmed from the need for a free and comprehensive training before applying for research approval at Transy!
TRAIN
On this website, you will find Training Modules focused on ethical considerations during research for both human and animal-based research, an overview of the different types of methodology used in research, and the procedures necessary to obtain permission to conduct research at Transy.
TEST
After a training module is completed a test can be taken to prove mastery of the material. There is one test for each Training Module, 3 in total.
CERTIFY
Once training modules are completed and the tests have been passed you can request a certificate of completion. By completing modules you will receive a special "Transy Research Certification" indicating that you have met the minimum guidelines to conduct research responsibly and ethically.
APPLY
With a Transy Research Certification, you will have met the Federal Guidelines required for human and animal subject research and can now apply for research approval.
