May Term travel courses are hybrid; you will have some class meetings on campus and you will also be traveling abroad! Courses meet on campus at the start of May Term for several days to a week and then travel for approximately 10 days to 2.5 weeks. Then you will return to campus to finalize May Term. Specific travel dates during the May Term period will vary based on the course.
The May Term travel course fee covers the following:
Airfare
Accommodations/lodging
Local transportation
Course activities and excursions
Entrance fees/guide fees
Accident/sickness insurance and health and safety preparation
Some meals (the number of meals covered by the course fee varies depending on the specific course)
In addition to the items covered by the course fee, you may be responsible for the following costs (note that these vary by course!):
Some meals
Checked luggage (some of the air tickets include this while others do not)
International data plan for your phone. (Some faculty may require this for your specific course. We can work with you to explore phone providers, eSIM cards, or other options.)
Yes! As part of the application process you can choose to apply for Transy scholarships, which range from $200 to $1,500. Please note that the scholarship review process takes into account both need and merit.
You don't need a passport to apply to May Term travel courses! You will need to begin the passport application process shortly after committing to a course. The Study Abroad office will work with you on this process.
The first payment ($400) is due by Friday, October 23 to reserve your spot in the course. The rest of the payments will take place over the following 4-5 months. Note that by making this first payment, you are committing to participating in the course and to completing all of the following course payments.
There may be alternative options for direct enrollment at our partner institutions in Florence or in Athens, or other programs with our study abroad partners that fit the timeline you are considering. You can schedule an appointment to discuss your options, or contact Study Abroad with questions.
As part of your application, you will choose one course to which you will apply. However, if you would be open to considering other courses, there is a place in the application for you to note this possibility.
Every year we see more students applying for May Term travel, so the application process gets increasingly competitive and there are often more interested students than spots available in a course. If your chosen course is full or you are on the waitlist, we invite you to consider options if there is space in an alternate course.
May Term travel courses change every year and are generally announced approximately one year in advance. Some courses are consistently offered on a two- or three-year rotation, and other courses are new each year.
Most travel courses have between 12 and 20 students, but the exact number of student travelers will on the specific course.
Yes! For May Term 2027, most of the courses don't have any prerequisites, so it can be a great option regardless of how many courses you have taken at Transy. Check each individual course page for details about any prequisites.
