Muslims, Jews, and Christians in Medieval Spain: the realities of "convivencia"
Spanish, Classics, and Philosophy - SPAN 2294 | CLA 2294 | PHIL 2294
During the medieval period, the Iberian Peninsula was home to three major cultures (Muslims, Jews, and Christians) who fought, traded, exchanged ideas, and lived together between the VIII and XIV centuries.
Although peaceful coexistence was not always possible, the intercultural and intellectual exchange that this coexistence made possible gave birth to one of the most sophisticated and influential periods of Medieval Jewish, Islamic, and Christian philosophy. In this course, we will first read selections from primary texts by Muslim, Jewish, and Christian authors to better understand the contributions of these groups to not only Medieval Spain, but Western Europe.
Through the travel component of this course, we will visit cities and sites that are closely aligned with these authors and their works to see how these three groups lived together both in harmony and in times of tension.
