Landscapes of Dissent: Social Movements in Paris and Brittany
French and IDS (Interdisciplinary Studies) - FREN 2294 and IDS 2294
Montmartre and the Latin Quarter—two of Paris’s most iconic neighborhoods—are sites marked by a long history of dissent, from the Commune of 1871 to the student-worker uprisings of May 1968. But how does protest change when it shifts from the symbolic center of power to landscapes shaped by labor, land, and local identity?
The core of this course follows that question west to Brittany, where social movements took root and reshaped national debates. Through site visits, archives, films, and conversations with local actors and French students, we will examine how movements embedded in place transformed debates over democracy, work, gender relations, and the environment.
By the end of the course, students will see how landscapes shape political imagination—and how struggles over work, land, and climate in Brittany speak directly to the democratic crises and ecological challenges confronting our world today.
