Liberatory Design means empowering communities to lead in the creation of learning environments that undo oppression in self, community, and systems. These learning environments make key Leaps to support students in having equitable, 21st century learning experiences that transform their lives and contribute to collective liberation for all.

Forest Freedom School, part of Abundant Beginnings, is a collectively run, Black-led community education initiative. This place-based school focuses on Black students, gender expansive and queer students, disabled learners, students holding trauma, and all the intersections.

Brooklyn Free School’s mission is education for social justice. They are committed to anti-racist and anti-oppressive stances and utilize democratic decision-making processes to amplify young people’s voices and ideas.

City Garden Montessori seeks to affect change by undoing racism at all its levels. Their holistic approach to education seeks to transform individuals, schools, the community, city, and society.

Community Roots is a deliberately diverse school community that takes an explicitly anti-bias approach to curriculum, instruction, and assessment; school culture; and staff training. This approach prioritizes identity, diversity, justice, social action, and inclusion.

Since the 1970's, the Crestmont community has spoken up and advocated for their beliefs. This deliberately diverse community uses a social justice curriculum and a commitment to the whole child to position students to become courageous, change-making citizens.

Ember seeks to transform students labeled as 'at-risk' into social entrepreneurs through mindfulness, trauma-informed practices, and culturally and economically relevant pedagogy. 

ECHS is a community-designed, student-led, innovative school. The learning experience works towards liberation and social justice through Transformative Resistance, with ample opportunity to learn from and be change agents in their community.

ECFS seeks to prepare students to make change within and beyond their communities. Their curriculum examines power structures; their operations include reporting systems for data transparency and the identification of discrimination and bias; and their culture includes open conversations, healing, and training.
