We borrowed the idea of hosting an unfocus group from IDEO. Teams will share their projects-in-progress and request feedback from a diverse collection of people.
Objectives
By completing this activity girls will
understand the value of receiving input from many different sources.
How to Implement:
Two to three weeks before you have the girls do this activity, introduce the unfocus group concept: teams share their projects-in-progress and request feedback from a diverse collection of people.
Help girls brainstorm possible unfocus group participants (at least two). Encourage them to consider not only their target audience but also unusual or unexpected users who can offer a unique perspective or interesting feedback (e.g., parents, teachers, siblings, other students, community members).
Here are some prompts to get them started thinking about the process.
Identify:
What kinds of people might be able to offer you a unique perspective on your project?
Who are two unfocus group members you plan to share your project draft with?
On the day of the unfocus group, have the groups do the following.
Observe:
Share your project with your unfocus group and observe everyone's reactions.
What are they getting stuck on?
Are they interacting with your project the way you imagined?
Are they doing anything surprising?
Interview:
What did they like about your project?
Do they have any questions about the project?
What is a suggestion they would make to improve the project?
Allow girls time to meet with their project team members to share feedback collected from different unfocus group sources.
What feedback did you receive from your interview?
What suggestions, if any, do you plan to incorporate into your project next?
Notes for Educators
Help girls get creative in researching and discovering feedback sources. Could projects be shared with youth from another school/program?
This is a great time to bring in a role model!
