Robotics Makeathon

Project Set Up:

Introduce the general challenge to the girls. Create a large scale robot experience that has a shared theme. Each team will create a part of the experience that fits the theme, incorporating both Hummingbird and Sphero.

As a whole group brainstorm ideas for possible themes and vote on what theme to do. Have the girls individually brainstorm some ideas for what a section that they want to work on would be. Have them pitch their ideas to each other to form project teams.

Here are a couple of ideas to get started.

• mini golf course: each team could create an obstacle and a hole, the sphero could be the golf ball while the hummingbird is the obstacle
• robot petting zoo: each team could create one or two animals for the zoo with instructions on how to feed it and create it's environment
• carnival: each team could create a game or a "ride"

Deliverables Definitions:

• Design Statement: A statement describing the design for the Hummingbird and Sphero and how they fit into the larger group project.
• Design Sketches: Drawings to accompany the design statement.
• Pseudocode: Informally written code that’s easy to read and incorporates as much technical terminology as possible.
• List of Materials Needed: All items that need to be gathered or created to complete the design.
• Working Prototype Sphero: The code developed in SpheroEDU.
• Working Prototype Hummingbird: The code developed in Ardublock for Hummingbird.
• Demo Video: A short video that shows the team demonstrating their designs in action. Groups will share their demo video in Flipgrid.
