Project Set Up:

Introduce the general challenge to the girls. Create a costume with smart features (one sensor and two outputs, one of which can be an LED). It should fit into the overall theme that the entire group decides on.

As a whole group, brainstorm themes and then vote on which theme to do. Have the girls individually brainstorm some ideas for what a section that they want to work on would be. Have them pitch their ideas to each other to form project teams.

Here are a few ideas to help spur your imagination:

• superhero scientists
• futuristic book characters
• historical gadgets

Deliverables Definitions:

• Character Persona: A detailed written narrative (about a paragraph in length) telling the story of the character. This can be done before or after the mood board and design sketches.
• Mood Board & Design Sketches: A collection of images and writing that can be digital or in a collage that shows the ideas that a designer wants a costume to convey.
• Pseudocode: Informally written code that’s easy to read and incorporates as much technical terminology as possible.
• List of Materials Needed: This includes any costume pieces that you might need to complete the look beyond the piece that is programed, and can include garments and accessories. These can be pre-made pieces and items you might need to construct.
• Working Prototype: Screenshot of code developed in Arduino and photos of creations.
• Demo Video: A short video that shows the team demonstrating their designs in action. Groups will share their demo video in Flipgrid.
