How to Implement

• Review the four computational thinking practices and tell the girls to look for evidence of them being used in the episode.
• Watch the SciGirls episode: High Tech Fashion.
• Discuss these questions. What were some of the ways the SciGirls brainstormed? How many of their initial ideas were present in the final design? Where did the SciGirls use computational thinking practices?
  • Talk about e-textiles and wearable electronics. Ask the girls what they think would be considered an e-textile or wearable electronics project? What are some examples that they may have seen or experienced in their own lives? Ask the girls to brainstorm a list of examples. These can include examples from pop culture such as movies or television shows. (Fitbit, Tron, light up holiday sweaters, Inspector Gadget, light up sneakers, superhero costumes, football helmets, astronaut gear, clothing with built-in bluetooth, cochlear implants, Halloween costumes, conductive finger gloves, heater socks, Life Alert)
  • Often, something unexpected may happen with the garments that e-textile designers create. What was an unexpected problem with the dress from the episode? How did the SciGirls solve the problem? Could they have solved it differently? What kinds of skills might you need for a career in e-textiles?
• Have girls respond to the following prompt in their design journals:
  • Think about a piece of clothing or accessory you or someone you know has that could be enhanced with e-textiles. Draw a quick sketch of what it would do or how it would look. Write one or two sentences describing your design.
• Have girls share their ideas with a partner.
