Social Studies standards focus on history, geography, and economics with a focus on connecting themes and enduring understandings that go beyond the units and lessons taught. Enduring understandings are what students will take from their social studies lessons that will be applicable to real life situations. Inquiry is important to the instruction of the Georgia Standards of Excellence for Social Studies.

The Georgia Standards of Excellence for Social Studies were designed to develop informed Georgia citizens who understand the history of the United States and our place in an ever increasing interconnected world. It is essential that students understand their past and how that past influences the present day and the future.
