William Epps Cormack was born in St. John's on May 5, 1796. In 1822, Cormack, along with his Mi'Kmaq guide Joseph Sylvester, began a journey on foot across the uncharted interior of Newfoundland. The journey took 58 days, during which he collected data on the flora, fauna and geology of the interior of Newfoundland. He published this data in the Edinburgh Philosophical Journal in 1824 and his complete account of the journey titled "Journey Across Newfoundland" in 1854.
This plaque, located along the Bar Road within our town, commemorates the journey Cormack made which began at this location in Smith's Sound, Trinity Bay.
