Qualifications

What do you need in order to  be a porter?

Firstly, you have to be a talkative person in order to make the patient feel included in the community, safe and welcome. You need to be patient and is able to find solutions to problems and be able to communicate with the patient whether they are non-verbal or suffering from hearing loss. How ever if you are shy you can be a kitchen or dirty linen porter.

Secondly, you will have to have an ability to be aware of your surroundings and have a decent stability and balance as it is a difficult job to wheel delicate samples or tests from ward to ward. You are expected to be fit enough in order to carry, lift or push things around and you must have some kind of relevant healthcare backround. A good sence of direction will also not go amiss.

Although there are no actual qualifications you may be asked to have math and English GCSEs and an official driver's license.
