Through varying expressions Sato's works in this series pursue the universality hidden within apparently different cultures.

Holes series: The impetus for this series was the subway that embodies New York City in various ways. These works are characterized by 'holes' on their surface. One early piece in this series adorned the cover of the New York Times magazine in 1976 and helped launch Masaaki Sato into the New York art world.
