January 26 - January 30
Welcome to Quarter 3 of 3rd Grade!
January 26 - January 30
Aloha Parents,
This week we are kicking off National Lutheran Schools week with a week of fun dress-up days that reflect our faith, community, and joy in Christ. Students are invited to participate each day by dressing according to the theme below.
Monday- "Sing loud and shine bright!" Wear neon colors to celebrate praising God with joyful hearts and bold faith (at least half of the outfit must be neon (shirt or bottoms).
Tuesday- "Serving God through our gifts". Dress as a future career to reflect how we can serve others through our talents and callings.
Wednesday- "Honoring God together". Wear your Sunday's best (church clothes) and/or a cross as we celebrate worship and reverence.
Thursday- "Stronger together". Wear sports attire to represent teamwork, fellowship, and our school community.
Friday- "Jesus is King". Wear purple to symbolize Christ's royalty (At least half of the outfit must be purple (shirt or bottoms).
*Students are still required to follow the school dress code on these days.
On Friday, your child was sent home with a flyer for Parent/Teacher Conferences, which will be held on Friday, February 6th. Please sign up by Wednesday, February 4th. (These conferences are optional.)
Since returning from break, I have noticed that many students are not organizing their papers in their desks and binders. Each day, I will be conducting desk and binder checks to ensure there are no loose papers. It is important that students learn how to stay organized and take responsibility for their materials.
Students are given time every morning to organize, as well as time between lessons to put away papers. I also explicitly tell students where each paper belongs. Students who are not organized will have their clothespin moved. This policy is being enforced because many students are stuffing papers into desks or binders, losing work they must redo, and misplacing worksheets that require multiple reprints.
Please continue to check your child’s grades on Sycamore weekly. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me.
Things to Note for This Week:
Spelling:
-This week’s spelling focus is on digraphs (a pair of letters that come together to represent a single sound).
Math:
-Multiplication and division facts
-A helpful multiplication practice website is https://www.timestables.com/speed-test/ or play Multiplication War.
-Division practice can also be found on https://www.timestables.com/speed-test/.
-IXL also has excellent division practice.
-We will finish Module 3, Topic B this week. Students will receive two review worksheets to help prepare for their upcoming quiz, which will be held on Tuesday, February 3rd. The quiz is scheduled for Tuesday to allow students additional time to study and meet with me for help if needed.
Reading:
-We will continue reading Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Our focus skills this week are cause and effect and problem and solution.
-Please ensure your child reads 15–20 minutes a day, five days a week. Students earn points for completed reading logs, which are entered into Sycamore. Please note that the January Reading Logs are due on February 9th, as there is no school on February 6th.
Grammar:
-Correcting sentences
-Comparative and Superlative Adjectives
Writing:
We are continuing to learn how to write an opinion piece using our OREREREO graphic organizer. Students will begin by writing a single paragraph to ensure they can identify a reason, support it with evidence, and explain it clearly. Our first class writing prompt is “Should students be given homework?” I am meeting with students throughout the brainstorming and drafting process to ensure understanding. This writing is due on Wednesday. The next writing prompt will be “Should children (grades 2–6) have their own cell phone?” After successfully completing these prompts, we will move on to reading articles to find reasons and evidence and will begin writing a five-paragraph essay.
Social Studies:
-We will continue and complete our unit on World Rivers this week.
-On Friday, students were not sent home with their practice quiz. We will work on this on Tuesday.
Bible:
-Bible Verse: You will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will hear you. Jeremiah 29:12
-The memory verse test will be on Friday. Students will write the verse.
-Bible lessons this week include Isaiah and the Return of the Exiles.
Homework and Reminders:
-Math homework will be sent home this week.
-Study Spelling Words
-January Reading Log due February 9th.
-Please sign planners on Friday and return them on Monday.
-Friday folders go home on Fridays and should be returned on Monday.
