Hello parents,
Your child should have come home today with their binder that has their *practice* homework packet inside. Please take some time to look that over with them. I will review it more in-depth this Thursday, August 29th at our Back to School night! (Hope to see you there!) There is an attached parent letter on the front of their homework packet that describes what is expected of them each night. Although this week is practice, we want students to complete their homework for this week fully and turn it in on Friday, August 30th. Typically, your child will receive their new homework packet each Friday in their grey "Friday Folder" and it will be due the following Friday. This allows for some work to be completed over the weekend if that is what works best for you and your child.
Please let me know if you have any questions! :) I let your children know to circle the number on a math question they need my help with and to come to me the next morning to work on the problem with me. Additionally, students know that it is ideal if they bring their binder (with their homework inside) to and from school each day.
Thank you!
-Mrs. Kufchak
Enrichment Schedule (NEW- updated 9/25/23)
Archived Class Updates Below
Dear families--
As you may have seen today there is NO SCHOOL due to the flash flooding advisory. Additionally, that means our field trip is cancelled. Our field trip to the Santa Cruz Mission is postponed until March 17th. Thank you for understanding. If you have any questions about school being closed please direct your questions to the office. Thank you and be safe.
Good morning families--
SCIENCE FAIR (notebook check this Friday)-- This week, we are asking your children to make a page in their science fair notebooks for materials and a page for the procedure. For the materials, students need to list what they will need to conduct their experiment. Not all materials will need to be gathered by this Friday, just be written down. Similarly, for the procedure please help your child form numbered steps on what they will need to do to begin experimenting soon. They do not need to start experimenting just yet, but just need to write down how they think the procedure will need to go. This can be modified later.
CHRISTMAS PARTY, DEC 15th -- On Thursday before Christmas break, I will be having a party throughout the day. I will be posting on an event for items to sign up for. I am unsure yet if we will be doing any activities that require volunteer help, but please note that any volunteers should already be fingerprinted. (This may not be the case for class parties--I will double-check with the office and update you all.) *This day is also a Christmas Spirit day so fun Christmas colors, headbands, hats, etc are encouraged. :)
CAROLS, COOKIES, & COCOA, Dec 16th -- On Friday it is a half day and we get out at noon, however, please join us in the Main Auditorium for our annual Carols, Cookies, & Cocoa event. Your children have been practicing Christmas carols and are over the moon excited to share their joy in song in front of you all. Please send your children to school in red/green/white/black/gold/silver. The office is requesting no big hats or big bows on performance day so nobody is blocked. Once the day gets closer I or the office will send an update on where to pickup your child after the performance.
Please message me with any questions. Thank you!
--Mrs. Kufchak
Happy Thanksgiving Break everyone! :)
We made it! I pray that you all have a happy, healthy, and safe Thanksgiving Break with your loved ones. Students will be getting their Week 14 HW packet on the Monday they return to school--November 28th.
Thank you and I am thankful for you!
-Mrs. Kufchak
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Hi parents,
Parent teacher conferences are just around the corner. :) Please note that if you were signed up by me that is because us teachers work together to coordinate back to back times for your children with siblings. If however the time you were signed up for does not work, no worries--please remove yourself from that slot and choose a new time. Conferences are about 20-25 minutes long and they are adults only. We should have Crosswalk available if needed.
Thank you and I look forward to meeting with you all.

Hello parents,
I just dropped your kiddos off to their first Spanish class! We are thrilled to have Spanish back this year. :) Their teacher, Mrs. Pizarro, asked if I could reach out to you all to please purchase a composition notebook for your child. This notebook is separate from the 2 we already require in class for me, and this notebook will be used solely for Spanish.
Thank you so much for purchasing this notebook before next Tuesday so your child is ready to go.
-Mrs. Kufchak
We started learning about Jesus' birth today! Here is the video my students requested to watch again. :)
I would love to extend the invitation for you to join me in room 2307 for Back to School Night this Thursday, August 25th! We have two sessions so please choose the one that fits best with your schedule. You can either come for our 6:00-6:30pm session or the 6:45-7:15pm session. Each session will be the same--I will run through a powerpoint I have created, I will have a parent form about your child for you to fill out, and I will have a piece of paper for you to write your child a note. There will also be cookies and coffee in the lobby, so don't miss out on that! :) If you are unable to attend this event I will post my powerpoint in PDF form on Bloomz as well as my on website.
Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you all this Thursday evening!

Dear parents,
We made it! Our first two days of third grade are complete and we are excited to begin our first full week. This week we will have our students practice doing some of their homework activities in class and will expect students to finish it at home. We will not grade Week 1 homework as it is practice. We will also be taking practice tests for spelling, the memory verse, and on x2’s this Friday to get our testing jitters out.
Next week we start with our normal homework routine. We will be going over the homework routine at Back to School Night this Thursday.
Nightly Homework Student Expectations
1. Spelling Activity: Please record by writing in the box what you did and attach it, if it is a written assignment--for example 3x each. Your activity list to choose from should be in your binder.
2. Math Facts: You can make flash cards, practice verbally, or find a good website/APP to practice your Multiplication level. Tests are timed--3 minutes.
3. Spiral Review: This is the paper with the pencil on top. There are 20 math problems total for the week, so an average of 5 per night, but you may choose to do more.
4. Memory Verse: We will practice a new Bible verse each week in class. Students are expected to memorize this verse and be able to recite it aloud on Friday.
5. Reading 20 minutes: Your child needs to read and record their pages nightly. Parents please sign the log Thursday night. (20 minutes each day).
Your child will normally receive their Friday Folder every Friday. Inside will have completed work to keep at home, and their homework packet for the following week. Hopefully with a good routine it shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes on average per night (not including the reading portion).
Warmly,
Mrs. Kufchak & Mrs. Bootz
First day of school photos are available to view/download on Bloomz. :)
Parent-Student Handbook 2022-2023

Please gather at the flag poles at 7:30 am, and we will leave for San Francisco around 7:45 am. We will be returning to school around 3pm. More details on Bloomz. :)
Welcome back from break everyone! Please remember that your child's Science Fair Project is DUE this Wednesday, January 5th. This Thursday/Friday students will be writing and practicing their speeches. Students will then use their speeches to present their projects to the class the following week. :)
Looking forward to it!

Ways to study for your math facts at home:
The classic- make flashcards- they really work! It can be helpful to have a set in the car and one at home.
Call-outs while you drive! Test your child on their facts as you drive- they don't even need flashcards for this.
Multiplication Songs- There are so many youtube videos with multiplication songs- just search for "multiplication song for x2" or whatever fact your child is on. Here are a couple that we use in class: x2 Song-Can't stop the feeling, x3 multiplication song, x4/multiples of 4 rap
Can you Beat the Clock? This is a paper to help your child practice with a time limit. Please note, this paper doesn't include x11 or x12. This paper is given to students to use at home or in the classroom upon request, it will not typically be sent home.
Online Review Games and Apps:
For example, try visiting www.multiplication.com
Click “Auto-Scored Quizzes”
Click “Multiplication” or “Division”.
Click the number that corresponds with the fact group you are working to master.
Type your name and click “Start Self Correcting Quiz Now”.
Complete the quiz
Multiplication Games- There are many different websites and games online, like Monster Math.
Hi parents, Please check Bloomz for a PDF of my Back to School Slides. Thank you! :) -Ms. Kyle
Friday Folders and Practice Homework
Happy Friday!
What a wonderful first three days with your amazing kiddos! I am so thankful to be teaching your children and look forward to a wonderful year ahead! You will notice that in your child's backpack they received a grey "Friday Folder."
On the "Keep at Home" side are some informational papers for you as well as our first Scholastic Book Order form--to be used to order online. Student work will be placed on this side as well.
On the "Return to School" side is a student information sheet for you to fill out, and a *practice* homework (it will not be graded) for next week that should be brought back to school. We will be working on it and showing the students how to fill it out in class next week. The practice homework will include spelling practice, math spiral review practice, and memory verse practice. Students will not be practicing multiplication math facts for the first week or so. Reading for 20 minutes and filling out their reading log can be practiced at home--students should fill out the reading log and parents you will sign it once on Thursday to confirm accuracy.
The Friday Folder with the filled out "Student Information" sheet needs to be returned to school by next Wednesday. The completed practice homework will be turned in on Friday and they will also take a practice spelling and memory verse test to get any jitters out before their real tests during Week 2.
Thank you--please let me know if you have any further questions! :) -Ms. Kyle

Unit 1 Math Test Tomorrow (Practice Test sent home)
Hi parents,
Your child will be completing their first Unit test in Math tomorrow. In today's class we completed a practice test together. This practice test (which should be in their binder) mirrors the real test--just with different numbers. Please spend some time reviewing this with your child tonight to make sure they feel ready for tomorrow. :) Thank you! - Ms. Kyle
Some strategies they can use when solving multiplication and division problems are:
--Make an array
--Use skip counting
--Use repeated addition
--Drawing a picture/show grouping
Now that we are back at school, please look for your child's silver folder full of their graded work as well as the homework packet for the following week. The homework will be due each Friday morning. For homework, most weeks will look like what you saw in this week's packet. Here is a breakdown of 3rd grade weekly homework.
✏️ One spiral review math page. (Students may choose how to complete this. For example, they can do 5 problems a night, or perhaps choose two nights in which they'll complete one side or the other. Please encourage whatever works best for your family.)
📝 Spelling tic-tac-toe practice activity on Mon, Tues, Wed, and Thurs.
📚 Reading for 20 minutes each week night (fill in their reading log) Parents: Please sign reading logs on Thursday nights so that your child can turn it in on Friday.
💭 Practice multiplication facts & the bible memory verse for the quizzes on Friday.
*HOMEWORK should take about 30 minutes each night (Monday-Thursday) Please email me if it is taking much longer than this.
SCIENCE: 🍎We are investigating why some apples are sweeter than others. Please sign up on Bloomz if you are able to bring in 🍎🍏 for our apple taste test next Tuesday, 9/29! We will need 4 apples of each of the 4 apple varieties.
BIBLE: Memorize Matthew 3:17 (ask your child to show you the motions that we have been practicing in class.) On Friday's the kids will recite the verse for their Bible Memory Quiz. *Now that we are back in person, we will have a new Bible verse to memorize each week. The verse goes along with what we are learning about during our BIBLE class time that week.
READING: Last week we read a story called, "My Very Own Room," and we have had great class discussions around it. Friday's the students will have their weekly comprehension quiz on the story after having the chance to read it to themselves on last time.
MATH: We have continued to grow with our multiplication strategies and we began learning about division for the first time this week! The kids are working hard to see the relationship between multiplication and division! This coming week we will have our first unit test, which will cover all that we've been learning since the beginning of school. (This is not something that they would need to study for at home.) ;)
📝MATH FACT QUIZ UPDATE 📝Now that we are back in school we will resume our weekly multiplication fact timed quizzes.
These quizzes are only 2 minutes and 45 seconds and the students need to complete the whole page without missing any of the problems in order to move up to the next number in their times tables. If your child passed their x3 they will move on to x4, if not they will study for x3 again. Please look for your child's timed test in their silver take-home folder and to check and see if they passed and are moving on the their x4s or if they need to continue practicing their 3's.

Hello Parents,
If your child is at home, please see the attached document and print for your child to check off work to be turned in. When dropping off work you have Thursday/Friday to exchange folders between 9am-4pm, however it is ideal for you to wait until Friday after 2pm so that work from Thursday's/Friday's can be turned in as well.
Parents of our day campers--your children already have the attached document. They were given it by their pod leaders. (Their work will be turned in by Pod Leaders on Friday's.) It is our suggestion that if they bring their exchange folders home for you to see/take any "Keep at Home" papers that you please leave the "Return to School" papers in their original order as well as remind your child it needs to be with them come school on Monday.
A note about PE logs--There is a box with the words "PE Logs" on it placed near the crates for work drop off/pickup. When your child's PE log is complete please drop off the PE log into that box. :) For new PE logs, please find it on your child's "Ms. Kyle Google Classroom" page under "Important Materials."
Thank you and please message me with any questions. Have an amazing afternoon, -Ms. Kyle

Hi all,
I just wanted to help make sure the math facts daily HW practice and Friday test is clear. The Math Facts test starts off with x's 2. If your child passed the top of their test will say, "Move on to x's 3." If your child did not pass they are expected to "keep practicing," and will be tested again on x's 2 tomorrow. Last week we attached a "Can you Beat the Clock" paper on the back as one way they can practice. Just note that page does not includes x11 and x12. Students should practice their math facts in a number of different ways: verbally, writing it down, with flashcards, online with apps/games, etc. This is part of their daily homework. Please note: The math facts test has been changed from 1.5 to 2 minutes. Please message me with any questions. :)
Here is an app a parent found that has been helping their child:

Parents,
We made it! Our first week of third grade is complete and we are coming up on week 2. This past week I had the students practice doing some of their homework activities in class. I did not correct their homework as it was just practice. We took a practice spelling test and multiplication test today just to get our jitters out.
Next week we start with our normal homework routine. We will also be discussing it during Back-to-School-Night. If you have any questions about homework, please feel free to email me or message me on our class Bloomz site.
Homework Nightly Expectations
1. Spelling Activity: Please record by writing in the comments section what you did and attach it, if it is a written assignment. For example 3x each. I collect the spelling packet on Fridays.
2. Math Facts: You can make flash cards, practice verbally, or find a good website/APP to practice your Multiplication level.
3. Spiral Review: This is the math paper that has the apples at the top. There are 20 problems total for the week, so an average of 5 per night, but you may choose to do more. I collect it only on Fridays.
4. Memory Verse: Practice a few times each night and by Friday you will be golden!
5. Reading 20 minutes: Your child is expected to read nightly. I will be checking their minutes daily. (20 minutes each day Mon. - Fri.)

Hopefully with a good routine it shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes average per night (not including the reading portion). As a reminder, homework is designed to be a review of what we have learned in class. No new content that has not been previously introduced will be included.
Hi families,
Just wanted to say that today was a wonderful first day! I'm very thankful to have your children in my class and for all of you as well. This should be a fantastic year! HW is "practice" this week so it won't be graded. We will be working on it in class and they will practice turning it on Friday. This Friday students will be getting a new Homework Packet (Week 2) that is expected to be completed and turned in the following Friday for a grade. For this week, feel free to take a look at what is in their binders but know that nothing is due.
Have a restful evening! :)
-Ms.Kyle

Below is the Parent-Student Handbook for 2018-19. This handbook is not all-inclusive, and changes will continue to be communicated to you during the school year. There is an electronic copy on www.tlcs.us and there are a few paper copies in the school office if you need one. Hopefully it is full of important and useful information.
It is the parent/guardian's responsibility to read this handbook with your student. Email receipt of this handbook constitutes agreement to the policies set forth in this handbook by both the parent/guardian(s) and the student(s).
Hello all,
Please make sure your child is reading for at least 20 minutes each night. I had a lot of students tell me today that they are not doing that, and they need to in order to grow as readers as well as meet their goals. The AR goal due date ends next Friday. I try to have them read in class as much as possible, but the 20 minutes is outside/homework time.
Thank you so much. :)
**Note - students can take AR quizzes at home by going onto tlcs.us and clicking the AR button in the upper right hand corner, or there is a tab on my class website for Accelerated Reader, that brings up the website as well. Students usernames are the first initial of their first name and the first four initials of their last name. Ex: bkyle and the passwords for AR are all: abc
Hello all,
Build-A-Bike today went wonderfully! Thank you all who donated, volunteered, and our students who were great the entire time!
If you have photos/videos please email them to bkyle@tlcs.us so I can create an album for us.
Also, in your child's homework folder you may notice a colored present with a rhyme from the 3rd grade teachers! Next week there will be no homework packet: which means no math facts, spiral review, verse, or spelling activities. We do want your children to read each night on their own, and of course continue their science projects--last progress check on Friday.
Again I am so thankful for you all and am very pleased with how this afternoon went. *Creations will be sent home next week, we are keeping them to dry over the weekend.
Blessings,
-Ms. Kyle
What is due this Friday 12/7 ?
Hi all,
Just wanted to clarify what is all due this Friday:
--Money for Build-A-Bike (this is the money that students have been doing chores or other service projects, that will goes towards purchasing Bikes that we will be building Dec 14th).
--Gift cards/toys/books (for the family from the fire/Paradise teacher).
--Kahn Academy activity. Below you will see how your child can login to Kahn academy. I have assigned our students a rounding activity due by Friday at midnight. I mostly want to see if you all are able to login and try is as Ms. Imel and myself want to utilize this resource more often.
--Science Progress Check. (Students can conference with me to tell me where they are at in their science project, or they can bring in their science notebooks if they have started writing additional notes, observations, results, etc).
--Friday homework packet (as always).
--**OPTIONAL** Christmas Decorations (extra things you have -- to donate or have us borrow for a few weeks). Example items needed include: small ornaments, small tree topper (angel, star, Santa, etc), Christmas lights, etc).
Hope this helps. :)
HI PARENTS, It is that time of year to start preparing for Cookies, Carols & Cocoa :) I just wanted to let you know what songs your kiddos will be doing this year.
The 2nd/3rd graders are singing songs about Shepherds!
1. Do You Hear What I Hear?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCsG4Uq7PHo&t=33s
2. Waiting for the King!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AASfpynk8Qg (the song happens from 3:16-5:42).
Possible Extra Song:
3. Christmas Time
https://www.elevationkids.com/song/christmas-time
4. We will also do Joy to the World as a group song at the end with everyone!
It is the same version as last year to make it easy!
Just a reminder that I will be submitting the scholastic order by the end of the day. You can place your orders online at scholastic.com/bookclubs using my class activation code: TMH2H
Also, if your child says they have the 0-5 review they need to know all of their multiplication facts for x0, x1, x2, x3, x4, and x5. There is not a "Can You Beat the Clock" for that so they can do any review that works best for them.
Additionally, the memory verse is Matthew 5:1-8 so they must come to school Friday morning prepared for the verbal test. Please make sure your child practices the entire passage (v.1-8) each night so they are ready. Thank you, and have a great weekend! - Ms. Kyle
Class Code - TMH2H
Order Due Date - 10/12/18
Subject: Scholastic Book Clubs Class Order Due Date is approaching!
Dear Families,
This is a friendly reminder that your Book Clubs orders are due by 10/12/18. You can place your orders online at scholastic.com/bookclubs using my class activation code: TMH2H

3. Spiral Review: This is the math paper that has the apples at the top. There are 20 problems total for the week, so an average of 5 per night, but you may choose to do more. I collect it only on Fridays.
4. Memory Verse: Practice a few times each night and by Friday you will be golden!
5. Reading 20 minutes: You can have your child read over the weekend and we also read in class. It is an average of 100 minutes a week. So however you choose to divide that up is fine. Parents need to sign reading log each night.
Your child will be bringing home their homework packet tonight and they turn it back in the following Friday. Hopefully with a good routine it shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes average per night (with-out the reading portion). If it is please communicate with me and we can try and find a solution.
Warmly,
Ms. Kyle
