California State Landmark Project

For this project, you will choose and research a California state landmark. First, you will submit your first, second, and third choices to me, and I will make sure that there are no duplicates in the class. This will be done in class. Once your landmark is selected, you will write a multiple-paragraph essay addressing the following questions:
· Where is it located?
· What are its special features?
· How does it represent its community?
· What is the importance of the monument or landmark?
There will be enough time in class to complete a draft of your research report. We will type our reports in class. All written portions of the project will be completed during class.
MODEL- You will also make a model of your chosen state landmark. The model should be small enough to carry and fit on a student desk (16 x 24 in). It should be designed and created by you with limited support and guidance from parents as necessary. You are encouraged to be creative with your use of materials. The model will be completed outside of the school day.

Presentation Rubric- Students will be graded on a 1-5 scale. 5 Being the most points possible, for their project presentation in the following areas.
Project was clearly defined
Information was organized, neat, and prepared
Presence- comfort level, stance, poise, eye contact
Expression- spoke clearly, delivery, tempo

2nd Quarter Book Report!!
Students need to choose a chapter book for the project. This includes a book that is grade-level appropriate and challenging enough for your child. This book should be a book that has been read THIS year, independently, at home. The book selection needs to be approved by their teacher on or before Friday, December 1st.
Once their book has been approved, choose from the selection below to complete a Book Report project due on Tuesday, January 9th. This project should be completed at home and brought to school on the day that it is due. Students should also be prepared to give an oral presentation to the class on their chosen book.
Projects will be scored using the following rubric:
Work is creative, neat, and given the best effort (5 pts.)
Project and presentation represent details from the story (5 pts.)
Oral presentation was clear and informative (5 pts.)
Project was turned in on time (5 pts.)
CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING...
Diorama- Using a shoe box, depict an important scene from the book that includes the title/author, characters, and setting.
iMovie Trailer- Using iMovie, create a trailer describing parts of your book including the title/author, characters, setting, and plot. Your iMovie can be emailed to your teacher or downloaded to a zip drive for viewing in the classroom.
Tri-Fold- Create a trifold pamphlet that includes the title/author, beginning, middle, and end of the story, characters, setting, and plot.
Character Interview- Create a script with questions and answers as if you had interviewed the main characters of the story. Include the title/author, setting, plot, and characters.
Timeline Poster- Use a large piece of poster board. Use words and pictures to make a timeline of the important events in your book. Include the title/author, setting, plot, and characters.
Graphic Novel- Choose an important chapter from the book and present it as a graphic novel (comic strip style). Ask your teacher for comic strip paper if you choose. Include the title/author, setting, plot, and characters.
